Marie Claire's Fresh Faces Receive Positive Feedback

This past week Marie Claire released their fourth annual fresh faces issue. The faces include Aja Naomi King, Emily Ratajkowski, Zoey Deutch, Janelle Monae, and Alexandra Daddario. Marie Claire chose these five women to be the fresh faces of 2017 for the following reason. “Five extraordinary women on the brink of something big. They're talented, yes—but they're not afraid to speak their minds, embrace their feminism, and be vocal advocates for change either.”

The general feedback from readers was positive. All were discussing their favorites and how beautiful the women looked. The major crowd focus was on How to Get Away With Murder’s Aja Naomi King. She received the most views on Marie Claire’s Instagram page when the celebrities' separate Boomerang's were posted promoting their covers. In searching the fresh faces hashtag, I also found that many other famous faces were found at the event to promote the fresh faces issue. Many of them used the hashtag in their own photos. I enjoyed that there were hardly any negative comments since Marie Claire was promoting such a positive cause.

I was glad to see diversity on the Marie Claire issue. Being a black woman I am aware that we are still working our way up in the entertainment industry in terms of being respected for the craft and offered diverse roles. Aja Naomi King discusses this in the article. Seeing a mixture of faces from different cultural backgrounds on the covers made me proud and hopeful for the future. I only hope that people actually clicked on the link in the tweet (where I first came across the news) rather than just look at how beautiful the women were. Although it was important to see the diverse beauty, reading what the women said in the article in regards to discussing their views on politics, feminism, and race was what truly was the purpose of the fresh faces issue.

Following the feedback that was received, I gathered that Marie Claire must be doing something right. I wouldn’t change a thing. The promotion across all platforms of the fresh faces issue was tailored to each social media outlet and the responses were positive. Readers were praising their choices for this year and suggesting who should be the fresh faces the following year. These responses could be used by Marie Claire to generate a consensus as to who should appear in their next issue.
