Artist Spotlight: Doja Cat - More than the Mooooo!

I know it may seem hard to believe for some of those more "mainstream" folk out there, but Doja Cat has other music. Although Doja's song Mooo! may have been catchy, it would be a shame to place all of her artistry into this one song box.
The first time I ever heard Doja Cat I was actually listening to Alina Baraz radio on Pandora. This was back in 2014 when I was cramming for a college final and really just needed that type of music that would prevent you from falling asleep in the library at 2am, but not make you want to put your back into it. Anyways, I was listening to Alina Baraz radio when this chill, almost ambianic beat kicks into my headphones. I pick up my phone and there she was, Doja Cat. What happened next I really didn't expect; she starts rapping! It wasn't that basic tick beat rap that other female rappers at the time were copying and pasting; it had a smooth flow, but with a bite.

"All these barsssss no police." After that I had to see for myself just what else this woman had released. To my sad misfortune, there was only one album called "Purrr!" Don't get me wrong, the mini album was bomb! All five little songs and I had them on repeat for the longest time. Even mixed them in with my Jhene Aiko playlist and that means something ok! I needed more. I followed Doja on Spotify and patiently waited for an album.
Four. Years. Later. Finally! I finally get that notification. "Doja Cat Releases New Album!" I can't tell y'all how fast I tapped my screen. In March 2018 I had more Doja Cat. It was what I expected. Doja with an elevated sound. Similar to her previous album that I had on repeat, but more developed (Wild Beach being my favorite). Smooth with that same bite. Now just let me say this, when it comes to music I like what I like and I don't really pay attention to if others like it. I've been like this since I can remember and I remain that way.
So. When I saw that Doja Cat was trending I got a little happy. I'm all like yayy! her album is finally getting the recognition it deserves. I was once again, sadly mistaken. Now don't get me wrong I'm not some hipster sitting over here saying been there listened to that, but come on. The woman puts a song out about going Mooo! and y'all lose it. *insert judgemental stale face* I heard it. I giggled. It's catchy. It even has that "smoooth" sound that I'm used to hearing from Doja. Pun intended. However, what about all her other music that is clearly being ignored.
Now after it's all said and done the song went viral. In my opinion it went viral quicker than her other music, but why? Why does it have to be something funny or catchy or a "bop" to go viral. What about that music that you can listen to when you're chilling at night in your bed writing? What about that music you need when you've had a long day and you just don't want to hear all that bass? What about that rap that doesn't make you want to go back in time and punch that girl in the face that you know was talking smack about you, but you were trying to be a better person? Sometimes you just want to chill and for me...Doja had that chill.

And she still does if you get a chance to listen to her album "Amala." This is why it shocks me that when I google Doja Cat, the headlines say, "Cancelled!" Listening to just the music, for me, she's nowhere near cancelled. She's an artist. She has a sound. She works on her craft despite the backlash and you have to respect that.
From here on out no more basing someone's whole image on one song ok? When you get the urge, think about this, Beyonce's whole career...based only on 7/11. Made you mad didn't it.

**Artist Spotlights was created because I wanted a way of discussing something else about an artist other than what was in the media. Anyone can look up specifics, but this is how I see it.**
